DIY: How to grout tiles and mosaics

Your tiles are laid, now it's time to finish the job perfectly. Grouting can make all the difference to the finish. Here's how to do it like a pro.

Grout has two roles. Firstly, its practical functions are to keep the spaces between the tiles from getting mucky, and to act as a buffer so the tiles don’t rub against each other and get damaged. Secondly, grout adds aesthetic appeal to floors and walls by creating straight lines, while coloured grout adds a decorative element.

Choose the right grout

The Arc product range of mould-, stain- and water-resistant grouts is suitable for most tile and mosaic jobs.

  • The flexible Arc Flexi-Grout is designed for wide-joint applications (up to 20mm) and can be used with all tile types and substrates.
  • Arc Floor Grout is ideal for wide joints between tiles (up to 12mm) and all tile types on solid substrates.
  • Arc Wall Grout is suitable for joint widths of 2 to 3mm.
  • Arc Pro-Line Grout is a highly versatile cement-based wall and floor grout made of 30% recycled materials. Available in nine colours, this grout can be used for joint widths of 2-15mm.

Tools for the job

  • Grout
  • Water
  • Bucket
  • Mixer/Bucket trowel
  • Grout float

How to mix grout

Arc grouts are easy to use, and come with specific instructions on the bag. Mix with clean, cold water until you have a smooth paste.

TOP TIP: Always add the grout mix to the water in your bucket and not the other way around.  If you’re using an admixture, add it to your water and mix thoroughly before adding any grout powder.

How to apply grout

Whether you are filling the gaps between large cement outdoor floor tiles or intricate glass mosaics on a wall, the principles of grouting are the same.

  1. The key to a good grouting job is to work in small sections. It may take a little longer with mosaic tiles because of their size and the numerous joints.
  2. Hold the grout float at a 45 degree angle, and apply enough grout to completely fill the joints.
  3. Using diagonal strokes, smooth the grout over the tile or mosaic surface. Use the edge of the grout float to scrape off large amounts of excess grout from the face of the tiles.
  4. Wait for the grout to be touch dry (about 15 minutes) Then use a dampened sponge to wipe the surface diagonally to the grout lines. Rinse out your sponge frequently with clean water.
  5. After about an hour, the grout should be sufficiently set for you to polish the tile surface with a dry clean cloth.

TOP TIP: Don’t use your shower or wet room for two weeks after grouting, to allow sufficient time to cure properly.
